Conflict-displaced families in 10 IDP camps on the outskirts of Burdubo district in Gedo are complaining of harsh living conditions.
Bishar Mohamed, a member of the IDP committee, told Radio Ergo the camps are home to 1,600 families, who are in dire need of support. He said they needed food urgently, as well as medicine, shelter and education services.
These IDPs, mainly pastoralists and farmers, fled their homes as a result of conflict in Burdubo last year.
Amina Ahmed Hasssan, a mother of six children in Bulo-hufey camp, told Radio Ergo she owned a small shop in the town but had to flee to the camps on the outskirts during conflict last year.
She said they had no food in the camp and were eating leaves to avoid starvation. “We are currently eating the leaves of the Rasow tree to stay alive,” she said.
Abdirahman Hussein, in Surriya camp, said there was hunger in the camp and conditions were getting worse.
Burdubo and surrounding villages have been affected by the ongoing Al-Shabaab blockade on the area.
