UNHCR and IOM on Friday distributed humanitarian aid to over 900 internally displaced families camping in Baidoa, Bay region.
The distribution included plastic sheeting for shelters, blankets and utensils for needy families.
Awliya Ahmed, 75, a mother of five children who fled from Qansahdere two months ago, welcomed the items and thanked both agencies for their timely supplies.
Another mother, Mu’mino Abdi from Tiyeglow district, complained that living conditions were worsening in the camps. She said the aid was just a drop in the ocean and appealed for more from other agencies.
The most recent influx of families to the Baidoa camps are herders who lost their livestock to the drought, farmers and others displaced by clan conflict in Bay and Bakol.
Abdikadir Mohamed, head of IOM for Bay and Bakool regions, told Radio Ergo they planned to assist over 1,500 needy families from Qansahdere, Dinsor, Tiyeglow and other areas.
“This is the first phase of donations we are making, already over 946 families in Baidoa camps benefited from it. We will continue until we reach the target number,” he told Ergo.
