In this week’s programme, we examine the pesticides developed by scientists as an environmentally friendly way of dealing with the locust plagues that have descended on many parts of Somalia. The pesticides being used aim to target the locusts whilst protecting people, animals, vegetation and other life cycles in the ecosystem.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is assisting the Somali agriculture ministry in sourcing these special pesticides and also training the locust spraying teams. Dr Mohamed Hassan Mohamud, Field Crop Protection Officer in Garowe with FAO’s Desert Locust programme, discusses these activities with Radio Ergo’s Abdirahman Taysiir.
