(ERGO) – Over 300 families uprooted from their homes by clan clashes in Galgadud region in central Somalia are facing hunger and lack access to basic needs.
A conflict between clan militias in Hargis village, 26 km west of Balanbale town, earlier in November forced the families to flee. Much property was destroyed.
Hussein LibanWarsame, Balanbale district commissioner, told Radio Ergo the displaced families were camping out in the open.
“Clashes over water sources erupted in Hargis village. Hundreds of people fled their homes. The families are living in villages on the outskirts of Balanbale town with no humanitarian support,” he said.
The district commissioner said his administration did not have the capacity to provide for the basic needs of so many families.
Hinda Mohamed Mohamud, a mother of nine, is sheltering under a tree with her family, 15 km from their home.
“We received some fried dough and 10litres of water this morning. This is not enough for a whole family. There are families who even missed this handout of food,” she said.
Hinda left her 40 goats and all the family’s belongings behind.
“When the fighting brought out, I fled with my children from our home and left the livestock back in the village. I have no information about what has happened to them,” she said.
“I cannot go back to my home and livestock because both sides are still in their positions. I call on the elders and authorities to end the fighting so that we can go back to our homes.”
HidigHure Adan moved with 53 goats and settled in a remote area 17km away from Hargis village. For the last five days, he has not received any support.
“Life is very difficult here. Apart from the scorching heat, we have no shelter, food or enough water. After long days of trekking, we are yet to receive any support,” he said.
