Over 17,000 needy families in Middle Shabelle region have received food donated by the Turkish Red Crescent and channeled through Somalia’s interior ministry.
The beneficiaries included destitute locals, internally displaced persons and physically disabled people.
Ali Ibrahim, head of a committee tasked to distribute the food, told Radio Ergo they gave out the items over a two week period in 19 villages and IDP centres in Jowhar, Mahadday, Adale, War-Sheikh, Bal’ad and Rago Elo.
He said every beneficiary family received 50 kg of flour and 10 kg of sugar.
Qamay Abdulle is a physically disabled mother and was among the people who received food. “I was given 50 kg of flour and 10 kg of sugar. This aid arrived when I most needed it. It will keep me for some days,” she said.
Ibrahim said there were others in dire need of humanitarian assistance in the region, but because of insecurity they could not distribute food in their areas.
