(ERGO) – The Ministry of Livestock of Puntland has been conducting an emergency livestock treatment campaign aimed at controlling disease killing goats in Sool region.

Pastoralists in Boocame and Sarmaanyo have long complained about diseases killing many of their animals.

Around 35,000 goats were treated for Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP) and various tick-borne diseases this week in Boocame and Sarmaanyo locations.

Leading the group conducting the exercise, Saed Muse described their actions as an emergency response to the outbreak of this disease. He told Radio Ergo that the 10-day campaign is winding up.

Radio Ergo’s local reporter in Buhodle interviewed some of the pastoralists who lost hundreds of goats. Mohamed Abdi Ali who lost 400 goats since the outbreak began said his remaining 200 goats received treatment and are in healthy condition.

Khadija Jama Shire told Radio Ergo that she remained with only 20 goats out of a herd of 100 before the outbreak.

According to veterinarian Dr Mohamed Ali, 20,000 goats were treated in Boocame and 15,000 in and around Sarmaanyo.
