(ERGO) – A local veterinary association has treated 110,000 goats for Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP) in Bardera in southern Somalia’s Gedo region over the past one and half months.
Dr Abdirisak Sheikh Hussein, a member of South West Livestock Professional Association (SWELPA), told Radio Ergo that the aim of the exercise was to treat and vaccinate animals against the disease.
CCPP has killed approximately 6,000 animals in the past two months based on information from local pastoralists. The disease normally breaks out during cold seasons.
“We have been treating 2,500 animals daily. We did this purposely so that in this Hajj season, treated animals can be healthy for export,” said Dr Abdirizak. He said some 10,400 pastoralist families had benefited from vaccination and treatment of their livestock.
Ibrahim Bishar, a herder in Lama-loys village, between Bardera and Burdubo districts, said his 98 goats had been treated for sickness and were now well. He lost 30 goats to the disease in the past few months.
Hassan Ibrahim, a herder in Anole village, 35 km from Bardera, told Radio Ergo by phone that his 70 goats had been treated. “My goats have been coughing frequently and had runny noses – I lost 20 of them to this disease,” he complained.
The Bardera veterinary team is among five teams carrying out treatment and vaccination in the seven districts of Gedo region.
