Over 120 patients have benefitted from a free cataract eye surgery clinic held in Jowhar, Middle Shabelle region.
The clinic went on over three days, during which time a team of three Somali eye specialists and four nurses carried out 25 cataract operations and treated 95 others for various diseases and complaints.
Dr. Mohamed Salad Khayr, one of the specialist team, said vision was restored to many people who had effectively lost their sight.
The chairperson of the association of the visually impaired in Middle Shabelle region, Ali Sheikh Rashid, said it was a great success. The exercise was supported by local organizations Nafi and Alabsar.
The eye operations and treatments were also given free of charge to patients. The last time such a service was offered in Jowhar was in 2007, when 947 patients benefitted from a clinic held at Jowhar general hospital. On that occasion, there was a $10 registration fee and patients also had to pay for their own medicines.
